Use getWidget to retrieve html embed codes from items

Aug 22 2011 - Melvin Tercan

Following our announcement on Widgets we’ve launched the getWidget method, which is a new method that allows you to retrieve the embed codes from widgets of items and display them in your own website or application!

It’s very easy to use: all you need to do is provide the item_id of the item and the maximum width (maxwidth) of the embed. Then, the method will generate the HTML code you need to embed the widget.

That’s it, happy hacking :)

Our revamped Search API now offers Geo + Autocomplete methods

Aug 07 2011 - Melvin Tercan

One of the most requested features from our developers was a way to use the geolocation data we have from all our items to search for all the items around you for example. Since we’ve implemented our new search engine we’re now able to offer you these powerful methods in a very fast way. We’ve even made an autocomplete suggestions method – just for the heck of it.

Read all about it in the fresh search tutorial. Have fun!

It’s now possible to upload base64 encoded files and images

Aug 06 2011 - Melvin Tercan

This might come in handy when you’re developing on mobile devices like iOS or Android. Just provide the base64 encoded string in the ‘file’ parameter and the filename in the ‘name’ parameter. See the method docs for more info or read the tutorial.

If you don’t know what base64 is, no worries, it’s basically an encoding scheme that’s often being used to encode binary data into plain text to make it easier to transfer data between applications. Almost every language provides encoding and decoding functions for this.

Example:

1. Go to the Test Console of the getItem method

2. Enter item_id KMmDQ39 to retrieve The original Wooden iPad Stand.

The Next Web Hackathon Was #%@#$!!

May 13 2011 - Richard Straver

I heard, read and seen them but I’ve never personally been to a hackathon before. I just came back from my first one and it blew my mind what a bunch of talented people can create in just 48 hours!

Melvin (Tinypay) & Augusto (Mashape) - Picture by Job Jacob from thoroughlygood.me

The hackathon was organized by The Next Web Amsterdam as a brand new element in their event. Basically they provided (web) companies the opportunity to sponsor the hackathon which allowed them to present the API in front of a group of ‘hackers’ (developers).

Hack on our API at the TNW Hackathon in Amsterdam!

Mar 28 2011 - Melvin Tercan

Build the best e-commerce application within 2 days at the TNW Hackathon and present it on stage at TNW 2011!

A typical hackathon

Our friends at Mashape, who help sponsor the TNW Hackathon, have invited us to join them to present our API (which is build on top of their platform) to see which one of you guys can hack the best e-commerce application within 2 days!

The event is going to be in Amsterdam (Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th of April) and you can still register yourself as a developer to hack on our or many other APIs. The team that creates the best app in this hackathon can present their application on stage at the TNW 2011 Conference and will get tickets for the entire 3 days.

If you’re not living in the Netherlands, you can crash in Amsterdam for cheap through Airbnb!

How to create a Flickr selling app in 5 steps

Mar 01 2011 - Melvin Tercan

This is a tutorial to explore the possibilities and the simplicity of our recently launched Tinypay API. With this API it is possible to add ecommerce functionalities to all kinds of applications in a few simple steps.

Flickr is known for the many professional photographers that use their service. While Flickr has made it possible to print your pictures with a couple of selected partners, it is not yet possible to put your professional pictures up for sale for interested buyers – at least not that I know of.

So, today I’m going to show you how you can simply create a selling tool for Flickr users to put their pictures up for sale with our Tinypay API in 5 steps. And oh yeah, I’ve build this demo-application in a single day – which means that you can do the same!

The idea

A simple import tool where you login with your Flickr account, select the pictures that you want to sell, put a price tag on them and put the pictures up for sale – so that buyers can download the original size (if present) of your picture after payment.

The demo

You can try the import tool out at http://flickr.tinypay.me or download the source code at https://github.com/melvinmt/tinyFlickr. The source code is ‘quick and dirty’, which means that it lacks comments, fancy MVC routing etc. but it should provide you with enough information to start building your own application. Same goes for the interface of the online demo – it is not meant to be used by end-users. :)
